Our Project Programs

EMPOWERING RURAL WOMEN FARMERS IN CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE PRACTICES

This project aims to promote climate smart agricultural practices in Gulu District, Northern Uganda. The project starts with a pilot of 50 women farmers who will be supported in the Gumprerom farmers group. With a target of reaching over 1,000 farmers in 2025. The project aims to promote awareness on climate-smart practices & technologies and in the long run boost agricultural production through the different planned interventions.

Problem

Rural women farmers in Uganda constitute about 74.3% of the agricultural labour force, face significant challenges in adapting to climate change (UBOS, 2020). Climate change-induced shocks such as droughts and floods have led to a 50% decline in agricultural yields, exacerbating food insecurity and economic vulnerability among rural women. Hence GWAA has come up with a project on climate smart technologies to address the effects of climate change.

A pilot of 50 women farmers will be supported in the Gumprerom farmers group. With a target of reaching over 1,000 farmers in 2025.

Awareness on climate-smart practices & technologies was conducted on 12th October 2024. 35 farmers were trained in sustainable farming practices and use of irrigation equipment. The farmers were trained in use of organic fertilizers in partnership with SR Fertilizers extension staff. This also included causes of climate hazzards and how to mitigate the hazzards like floods, droughts among others.

Sustainability

The project will remain sustainable through the following interventions.

Starter-Kits

Starter Kit Seeds of Okra & water melon given to the farmers group as starter kits.

Input Access Linkages

Input access linkages of organic inputs and irrigation kits through our partners will also be done.

Peer-to-Peer Learning

Encouraging continued peer-to-peer learning and support among women farmers.

Ongoing Partnerships

Ongoing partnerships with local organizations, donors and government bodies to ensure continued access to resources and training.
